Chapter 6

1 And the sons1121 of the prophets5030 said559 unto413 Elisha,477 Behold2009 now,4994 the place4725 where834 8033 we587 dwell3427 with6440 thee is too strait6862 for4480 us.

2 Let us go,1980 we pray thee,4994 unto5704 Jordan,3383 and take3947 thence4480 8033 every man376 a259 beam,6982 and let us make6213 us a place4725 there,8033 where8033 we may dwell.3427 And he answered,559 Go1980 ye.

3 And one259 said,559 Be content,2974 I pray thee,4994 and go1980 with854 thy servants.5650 And he answered,559 I589 will go.1980

4 So he went1980 with854 them. And when they came935 to Jordan,3383 they cut down1504 wood.6086

5 But as one259 was1961 felling5307 a beam,6982 the axe head1270 fell5307 into413 the water:4325 and he cried,6817 and said,559 Alas,162 master!113 for it1931 was borrowed.7592

6 And the man376 of God430 said,559 Where575 fell5307 it? And he showed7200 him853 the place.4725 And he cut down7094 a stick,6086 and cast7993 it in thither;8033 and the iron1270 did swim.6687

7 Therefore said559 he, Take it up7311 to thee. And he put out7971 his hand,3027 and took3947 it.

8 Then the king4428 of Syria758 warred3898 against Israel,3478 and took counsel3289 with413 his servants,5650 saying,559 In413 such and such6423 492 a place4725 shall be my camp.8466

9 And the man376 of God430 sent7971 unto413 the king4428 of Israel,3478 saying,559 Beware8104 that thou pass not4480 5674 such2088 a place;4725 for3588 thither8033 the Syrians758 are come down.5185

10 And the king4428 of Israel3478 sent7971 to413 the place4725 which834 the man376 of God430 told559 him and warned2094 him of, and saved himself8104 there,8033 not3808 once259 nor3808 twice.8147

11 Therefore the heart3820 of the king4428 of Syria758 was sore troubled5590 for5921 this2088 thing;1697 and he called7121 413 his servants,5650 and said559 unto413 them, Will ye not3808 show5046 me which4310 of4480 7495 us is for413 the king4428 of Israel?3478

12 And one259 of his servants4480 5650 said,559 None,3808 my lord,113 O king:4428 but3588 Elisha,477 the prophet5030 that834 is in Israel,3478 telleth5046 the king4428 of Israel3478 853 the words1697 that834 thou speakest1696 in thy bedchamber.2315 4904

13 And he said,559 Go1980 and spy7200 where351 he1931 is, that I may send7971 and fetch3947 him. And it was told5046 him, saying,559 Behold,2009 he is in Dothan.1886

14 Therefore sent7971 he thither8033 horses,5483 and chariots,7393 and a great3515 host:2428 and they came935 by night,3915 and compassed5362 5921 the city5892 about.

15 And when the servant8334 of the man376 of God430 was risen6965 early,7925 and gone forth,3318 behold,2009 a host2428 compassed5437 853 the city5892 both with horses5483 and chariots.7393 And his servant5288 said559 unto413 him, Alas,162 my master!113 how349 shall we do?6213

16 And he answered,559 Fear3372 not:408 for3588 they that834 be with854 us are more7227 than they that4480 834 be with854 them.

17 And Elisha477 prayed,6419 and said,559 LORD,3068 I pray thee,4994 open6491 853 his eyes,5869 that he may see.7200 And the LORD3068 opened6491 853 the eyes5869 of the young man;5288 and he saw:7200 and, behold,2009 the mountain2022 was full4390 of horses5483 and chariots7393 of fire784 round about5439 Elisha.477

18 And when they came down3381 to413 him, Elisha477 prayed6419 unto413 the LORD,3068 and said,559 Smite5221 853 this2088 people,1471 I pray thee,4994 with blindness.5575 And he smote5221 them with blindness5575 according to the word1697 of Elisha.477

19 And Elisha477 said559 unto413 them, This2088 is not3808 the way,1870 neither3808 is this2090 the city:5892 follow1980 310 me, and I will bring1980 you to413 the man376 whom834 ye seek.1245 But he led1980 them to Samaria.8111

20 And it came to pass,1961 when they were come935 into Samaria,8111 that Elisha477 said,559 LORD,3068 open6491 853 the eyes5869 of these428 men, that they may see.7200 And the LORD3068 opened6491 853 their eyes,5869 and they saw;7200 and, behold,2009 they were in the midst8432 of Samaria.8111

21 And the king4428 of Israel3478 said559 unto413 Elisha,477 when he saw7200 them, My father,1 shall I smite5221 them? shall I smite5221 them?

22 And he answered,559 Thou shalt not3808 smite5221 them: wouldest thou859 smite5221 those whom834 thou hast taken captive7617 with thy sword2719 and with thy bow?7198 set7760 bread3899 and water4325 before6440 them, that they may eat398 and drink,8354 and go1980 to413 their master.113

23 And he prepared3739 great1419 provision3740 for them: and when they had eaten398 and drunk,8354 he sent them away,7971 and they went1980 to413 their master.113 So the bands1416 of Syria758 came935 no3808 more3254 5750 into the land776 of Israel.3478

24 And it came to pass1961 after310 this,3651 that Ben-hadad1130 king4428 of Syria758 gathered6908 853 all3605 his host,4264 and went up,5927 and besieged6696 5921 Samaria.8111

25 And there was1961 a great1419 famine7458 in Samaria:8111 and, behold,2009 they besieged6696 5921 it, until5704 an ass's2543 head7218 was1961 sold for fourscore8084 pieces of silver,3701 and the fourth part7255 of a cab6894 of dove's dung1686 for five2568 pieces of silver.3701

26 And as the king4428 of Israel3478 was1961 passing by5674 upon5921 the wall,2346 there cried6817 a woman802 unto413 him, saying,559 Help,3467 my lord,113 O king.4428

27 And he said,559 If the LORD3068 do not408 help3467 thee, whence4480 370 shall I help3467 thee? out of4480 the barnfloor,1637 or176 out of4480 the winepress?3342

28 And the king4428 said559 unto her, What4100 aileth thee? And she answered,559 This2063 woman802 said559 unto413 me, Give5414 853 thy son,1121 that we may eat398 him today,3117 and we will eat398 my son1121 tomorrow.4279

29 So we boiled1310 853 my son,1121 and did eat398 him: and I said559 unto413 her on the next312 day,3117 Give5414 853 thy son,1121 that we may eat398 him: and she hath hid2244 853 her son.1121

30 And it came to pass,1961 when the king4428 heard8085 853 the words1697 of the woman,802 that he rent7167 853 his clothes;899 and he1931 passed by5674 upon5921 the wall,2346 and the people5971 looked,7200 and, behold,2009 he had sackcloth8242 within4480 1004 upon5921 his flesh.1320

31 Then he said,559 God430 do6213 so3541 and more3254 also3541 to me, if518 the head7218 of Elisha477 the son1121 of Shaphat8202 shall stand5975 on5921 him this day.3117

32 But Elisha477 sat3427 in his house,1004 and the elders2205 sat3427 with854 him; and the king sent7971 a man376 from before4480 6440 him: but ere2962 the messenger4397 came935 to413 him, he1931 said559 to413 the elders,2205 See7200 ye how3588 this2088 son1121 of a murderer7523 hath sent7971 to take away5493 853 mine head?7218 look,7200 when the messenger4397 cometh,935 shut5462 the door,1817 and hold him fast3905 853 at the door:1817 is not3808 the sound6963 of his master's113 feet7272 behind310 him?

33 And while he yet5750 talked1696 with5973 them, behold,2009 the messenger4397 came down3381 unto413 him: and he said,559 Behold,2009 this2063 evil7451 is of4480 854 the LORD;3068 what4100 should I wait3176 for the LORD3068 any longer?5750

Chapter 6

1 AND the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, Behold now, this place wherein we dwell with you is too small for us.

2 Let us go to the Jordan and cut from there every man a beam, and let us make a place for us to dwell there. And he said, Go.

3 And one of them answered and said, If you please, go with your servants. And he answered, I will go.

4 So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.

5 But as one of them was felling a beam, the axehead fell into the water; and he cried and said, I beseech you, my lord! it was borrowed by your servant.

6 And the prophet of God said to him, Where did it fall? And he showed him the place. And he cut off a stick and thrust it in there; and it stuck in the hole of the axehead.

7 And he said, Take it up to you. And he put out his hand and took it.

8 Then the king of Aram warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall we lie in wait.

9 And the prophet of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that you do not pass this place; for the Arameans are lying in wait.

10 And the king of Israel sent to the place of which the prophet of God told him and warned him about it, not once nor twice.

11 Therefore the heart of the king of Aram was sore troubled because of this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?

12 And one of his servants answered, and said, None of us, my lord 0 king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the thing that you plan in your bedchamber.

13 And he said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 Therefore he sent there horsemen and chariots and a great army; and they came by night and surrounded the city.

15 And when the servant of the prophet of God arose early and went out, behold, an army surrounded the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! what shall we do?

16 And he said to him, Fear not; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.

17 And Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, O LORD, open his eyes that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, Smite this people with dimness of vision. And he smote them with dimness according to the word of Elisha.

19 And Elisha said to them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek. But he led them to Samaria.

20 And when they were come into Samaria, Elisha said, O LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 And the king of Israel said to Elisha when he saw them, My father, shall I slay them? Shall I slay them?

22 And he answered, You shall not slay them; would you slay those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.

23 So he prepared for them a great banquet; and when they had eaten and drunk, they went to their master. So the raiders of Aram came no more across the border of Israel.

24 land it came to pass after this, that Bar-hadad king of Aram gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria and fought against it.

25 And there was a great famine in Samaria, as they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for eighty pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.

26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman to him, saying, Help me, my lord, O king.

27 And he said to her, Let the LORD help you; whence shall I help you? Out of the threshing floor or out of the wine press?

28 And the king said to her, What troubles you? And she said to him, This woman said to me, Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.

29 So we cooked my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, Give your son, that we may eat him; but she had hidden her son.

30 And when the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes as he walked upon the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he was wearing sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 Then he said, May God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall remain on him this day.

32 But Elisha was sitting in his house and the elders were sitting with him; and the king sent a messenger; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and push him outside, because the sound of his master's feet is behind him.

33 And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came to him; and he said, Behold, this evil is from the LORD; why should I pray to the LORD any longer?

1 And the sons1121 of the prophets5030 said559 unto413 Elisha,477 Behold2009 now,4994 the place4725 where834 8033 we587 dwell3427 with6440 thee is too strait6862 for4480 us.

1 AND the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, Behold now, this place wherein we dwell with you is too small for us.

2 Let us go to the Jordan and cut from there every man a beam, and let us make a place for us to dwell there. And he said, Go.

3 And one259 said,559 Be content,2974 I pray thee,4994 and go1980 with854 thy servants.5650 And he answered,559 I589 will go.1980

3 And one of them answered and said, If you please, go with your servants. And he answered, I will go.

4 So he went1980 with854 them. And when they came935 to Jordan,3383 they cut down1504 wood.6086

4 So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.

5 But as one259 was1961 felling5307 a beam,6982 the axe head1270 fell5307 into413 the water:4325 and he cried,6817 and said,559 Alas,162 master!113 for it1931 was borrowed.7592

5 But as one of them was felling a beam, the axehead fell into the water; and he cried and said, I beseech you, my lord! it was borrowed by your servant.

6 And the man376 of God430 said,559 Where575 fell5307 it? And he showed7200 him853 the place.4725 And he cut down7094 a stick,6086 and cast7993 it in thither;8033 and the iron1270 did swim.6687

6 And the prophet of God said to him, Where did it fall? And he showed him the place. And he cut off a stick and thrust it in there; and it stuck in the hole of the axehead.

7 Therefore said559 he, Take it up7311 to thee. And he put out7971 his hand,3027 and took3947 it.

7 And he said, Take it up to you. And he put out his hand and took it.

8 Then the king4428 of Syria758 warred3898 against Israel,3478 and took counsel3289 with413 his servants,5650 saying,559 In413 such and such6423 492 a place4725 shall be my camp.8466

8 Then the king of Aram warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall we lie in wait.

9 And the man376 of God430 sent7971 unto413 the king4428 of Israel,3478 saying,559 Beware8104 that thou pass not4480 5674 such2088 a place;4725 for3588 thither8033 the Syrians758 are come down.5185

9 And the prophet of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that you do not pass this place; for the Arameans are lying in wait.

10 And the king4428 of Israel3478 sent7971 to413 the place4725 which834 the man376 of God430 told559 him and warned2094 him of, and saved himself8104 there,8033 not3808 once259 nor3808 twice.8147

10 And the king of Israel sent to the place of which the prophet of God told him and warned him about it, not once nor twice.

11 Therefore the heart of the king of Aram was sore troubled because of this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?

12 And one259 of his servants4480 5650 said,559 None,3808 my lord,113 O king:4428 but3588 Elisha,477 the prophet5030 that834 is in Israel,3478 telleth5046 the king4428 of Israel3478 853 the words1697 that834 thou speakest1696 in thy bedchamber.2315 4904

12 And one of his servants answered, and said, None of us, my lord 0 king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the thing that you plan in your bedchamber.

13 And he said,559 Go1980 and spy7200 where351 he1931 is, that I may send7971 and fetch3947 him. And it was told5046 him, saying,559 Behold,2009 he is in Dothan.1886

13 And he said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 Therefore sent7971 he thither8033 horses,5483 and chariots,7393 and a great3515 host:2428 and they came935 by night,3915 and compassed5362 5921 the city5892 about.

14 Therefore he sent there horsemen and chariots and a great army; and they came by night and surrounded the city.

15 And when the servant of the prophet of God arose early and went out, behold, an army surrounded the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! what shall we do?

16 And he answered,559 Fear3372 not:408 for3588 they that834 be with854 us are more7227 than they that4480 834 be with854 them.

16 And he said to him, Fear not; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.

17 And Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, O LORD, open his eyes that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, Smite this people with dimness of vision. And he smote them with dimness according to the word of Elisha.

19 And Elisha said to them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek. But he led them to Samaria.

20 And when they were come into Samaria, Elisha said, O LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 And the king4428 of Israel3478 said559 unto413 Elisha,477 when he saw7200 them, My father,1 shall I smite5221 them? shall I smite5221 them?

21 And the king of Israel said to Elisha when he saw them, My father, shall I slay them? Shall I slay them?

22 And he answered,559 Thou shalt not3808 smite5221 them: wouldest thou859 smite5221 those whom834 thou hast taken captive7617 with thy sword2719 and with thy bow?7198 set7760 bread3899 and water4325 before6440 them, that they may eat398 and drink,8354 and go1980 to413 their master.113

22 And he answered, You shall not slay them; would you slay those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.

23 So he prepared for them a great banquet; and when they had eaten and drunk, they went to their master. So the raiders of Aram came no more across the border of Israel.

25 And there was a great famine in Samaria, as they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for eighty pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.

26 And as the king4428 of Israel3478 was1961 passing by5674 upon5921 the wall,2346 there cried6817 a woman802 unto413 him, saying,559 Help,3467 my lord,113 O king.4428

26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman to him, saying, Help me, my lord, O king.

27 And he said,559 If the LORD3068 do not408 help3467 thee, whence4480 370 shall I help3467 thee? out of4480 the barnfloor,1637 or176 out of4480 the winepress?3342

27 And he said to her, Let the LORD help you; whence shall I help you? Out of the threshing floor or out of the wine press?

28 And the king4428 said559 unto her, What4100 aileth thee? And she answered,559 This2063 woman802 said559 unto413 me, Give5414 853 thy son,1121 that we may eat398 him today,3117 and we will eat398 my son1121 tomorrow.4279

28 And the king said to her, What troubles you? And she said to him, This woman said to me, Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.

29 So we boiled1310 853 my son,1121 and did eat398 him: and I said559 unto413 her on the next312 day,3117 Give5414 853 thy son,1121 that we may eat398 him: and she hath hid2244 853 her son.1121

29 So we cooked my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, Give your son, that we may eat him; but she had hidden her son.

30 And when the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes as he walked upon the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he was wearing sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 Then he said,559 God430 do6213 so3541 and more3254 also3541 to me, if518 the head7218 of Elisha477 the son1121 of Shaphat8202 shall stand5975 on5921 him this day.3117

31 Then he said, May God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall remain on him this day.

32 But Elisha was sitting in his house and the elders were sitting with him; and the king sent a messenger; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and push him outside, because the sound of his master's feet is behind him.

33 And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came to him; and he said, Behold, this evil is from the LORD; why should I pray to the LORD any longer?
